Belarus responds sharply to report on "human rights violations"
Europe, which has caused so much suffering to our country, still dares to dictate us how to live. Belarus is developing despite the pressure and hysteria exerted by some Western countries, as well as false reports about our country. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN office in Geneva, Larisa Belskaya. The diplomat spoke in response to the report on "human rights violations" presented at the session in the context of the presidential elections in Belarus in 2020.
Larisa Belskaya, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva:
"Such reports, unverified and biased, close the possibility of the country's cooperation in the OHCHR. You, like many states here, Western states, do not want to listen to what the government says and cynically support those who oppose the Belarusian state. Here they talk about "victims of violence," "political prisoners." As we have repeatedly said, we do not have political prisoners, we have people who broke the law and received fair punishment. Some of those who they try to portray as "victims of the events of 2020" are indeed victims. But they are victims of the manipulations of those who are pathologically called "champions of human rights", who have involved them in illegal actions against the state, in attempts to overthrow state power and in violent clashes with the police. And now they present them as victims and collect evidence. A number of countries which speak about violence in Belarus, such as the USA, Germany, France and many others, unlike Belarus, regularly use water cannons and batons to disperse anti-government demonstrations.
Larisa Belskaya noted that the coup attempt in Belarus failed in 2020. But the information war against the country is gaining momentum. "The reasons for the attacks on Belarus are primarily geopolitical. We firmly defend our way of development and protect our state sovereignty. We maintain stability, despite the suffocating sanctions of some Western countries and their regular attempts to destabilize the situation and engage Belarus in an armed conflict. The people who survived the genocide of the World War II will not kneel before intimidation and threats," the diplomat stressed.
