MPs back amendments to Electoral Code of Belarus

Deputies supported amendments to the Electoral Code Wednesday. The document was introduced to the parliament by the President. Most of the innovations concern the emergence of a new type of voting in Belarus - the election of delegates to the All-Belarusian People's Assembly.

Today, deputies have adopted amendments to the Electoral Code, the law on citizenship and judicial system in order to develop the updated Constitution. After the amendments to the Constitution have been adopted, a lot of work is going on to update the entire legal framework of Belarus. There are 90 laws in this respect. 24 documents have already been adopted in two readings. And 12 have been adopted in the first reading.

Deputies supported amendments to the Electoral Code

So, the supported amendments to the Electoral Code, where the age limit for a presidential candidate was increased from 40 years. Presidential candidates could not be elected for more than two terms in a row. There is a new section that defines the procedure for electing delegates to the All-Belarusian People's Assembly from local councils of deputies and civil society.

The singlevoting dayfor the elections of deputies to the House of Representatives and local councils was scheduled for February 25, 2024, and within two months after the All-Belarusian People's Assembly will be elected. In fact, the election campaign preparation will begin next year. Before that, of course, the amendments to the code will also pass the second reading.

Innovations to the judicial system concern judicial proceedings and the status of judges. Also, the institute of direct constitutional reference has been introduced. It means that every Belarusian can get a clear answer if he or she thinks that his or her rights are violated or some norms of the laws are in conflict with the Basic Law. Moreover, the complaint will be accepted directly, bypassing all the state organs. But it has to be substantiated.
