Uncontrollable spread of weapons in Europe gives impetus for new round of arms race

At the 10th Beijing Xianshan Security Forum, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said that the accelerating militarization of the planet increases the likelihood of full-scale conflicts in all regions of the world. "We are witnessing the destruction of the system of international relations based on international law. First of all, the mechanisms of arms control and stability maintenance, created over decades, are being dismantled. And if earlier the system of treaties ensured the balance of forces at the minimum level of defense sufficiency, today nothing restrains the states from implementing their aggressive plans," Viktor Khrenin said.

As the Defense Minister noted, in Europe, uncontrollability serves as an impetus for a new round of the arms race. "It is no coincidence that today we see a tendency for states to increase military budgets, purchase offensive weapons for their armies, increase the number of troops, conduct endless exercises near the borders of opponents. In general, the accelerating militarization of the planet increases the likelihood of unleashing full-scale military conflicts in all regions of the world," the head of the military department stressed.
