Colombia convenes emergency UN Security Council meeting on Venezuela – it starts in New York

An emergency UN Security Council meeting on Venezuela is starting in New York. It was convened by Colombia. The meeting was supported by many countries around the world, outraged by the actions of the United States.
On the night of January 3, American forces launched an airstrike on Caracas. As a result of the operation, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured. They were flown to the United States. Within hours, they will appear in court in New York.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated his deep concern about the escalation of the situation in Venezuela and called on all parties to engage in dialogue. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, in turn, emphasized the need to protect the Venezuelan population.
The Russian Foreign Ministry called for preventing escalation and seeking a solution through dialogue. It also expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and support for the leadership's course, "aimed at protecting the country's national interests and sovereignty." Moscow openly condemned the act of armed aggression against Venezuela, as did China.
In Europe, only a few have the courage to say that the rule of force should not prevail over international norms.
Belarus has unequivocally declared its firm support for Venezuela's legitimate rulers.
Power in the country has been transferred to the vice president, a close associate of Maduro. However, Donald Trump, as he previously stated, intends to assume control of Venezuela until a new president is appointed.
