Flowers laid at House of Trade Unions in Odessa to commemorate May 2, 2014 tragedy
Citizens of Odessa continue to lay flowers at the Trade Union House, despite the danger of becoming victims of Ukrainian national patriots. Exactly nine years ago, a heinous crime was committed here: according to official Ukrainian data alone, 48 people were killed in a fire and beaten to death.
Despite a ban by the authorities, Odessa residents bring flowers to the House of Trade Unions.
The authorities did their best to prevent the tragedy site from becoming a public memorial: the building is fenced off with a metal fence and police officers are constantly on duty. However, the desire for justice is stronger than fear: the citizens continue to demand an unbiased investigation by the Ukrainian government of the terrorist attacks on dissidents.
Odessa tragedy
On May 2, 2014, Odessa was flooded with Ukrainian nationalists, mostly radical soccer fans. They attacked the tent camp of opponents of the Kiev Maidan: people who had taken refuge in the Trade Union House were set of fire, and those trying to get out of the fire were finished off in front of police officers. For Ukrainian nationalists, this crime remains a source of pride: they are still celebrating the tragic date with joyful messages on social networks. The authorities hastily conducted an investigation and declared the victims of terror responsible for their own deaths.
Meanwhile, a petition with a proposal to establish the Order of Bandera appeared on Vladimir Zelensky's website.
Dmitry Medvedev
Former Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev suggested that the Ukrainian authorities should glorify all European Nazis together, because this is now the main European ideology.
