Makei urges CSTO member states to strengthen cohesion and solidarity
A joint meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, the Council of Defense Ministers and the Committee of Secretaries of Security Councils of the Collective Security Treaty Organization was held in Yerevan on November 23, BelTA informs.
The event was held just before the session of the Collective Security Council with the participation of the leaders of the countries. The Belarusian side was represented by State Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Volfovich, Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin.
Most of the event was held behind the closed doors. According to the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, at the meeting there was a frank exchange of opinions on a wide range of regional and global security issues, as well as on the current military and political situation in the CSTO area of responsibility.
"In his speech Vladimir Makei acknowledged the deepening crisis of the existing world order, which affects all the spheres of the international relations. He stated about the discrediting of the most important institutions of peace, security and stability, such as the UN and the OSCE, the destruction of the international instruments in the field of arms control and non-proliferation. He expressed deep concern over the unprecedented scale of militarization of the neighboring NATO countries, which contribute to military and political tension and provoke further arms race," reads the details of the Foreign Ministry.
The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry urged the CSTO member-states to strengthen cohesion and solidarity in order to better cope with modern challenges and threats to security.
The joint meeting approved a number of documents on urgent issues of development and improvement of the CSTO, which were submitted to the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council.
The meeting also adopted a number of statements by the foreign ministers of the CSTO member States on topical issues on the international agenda, including a statement developed at the initiative of Belarus on strengthening the international and regional security architecture and arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation.
