Is Belarus going change its nuclear-free status?
Belarus does not intend to change its non-nuclear status. A representative of the Belarusian delegation, head of the international security and arms control department of the main department of multilateral diplomacy of the Foreign Ministry Vasily Pavlov, said this at a conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in the UN.
"All the insinuations over Belarus' non-nuclear status, as well as non-compliance with obligations under the NPT, are groundless," Sputnik quoted Belarusian diplomat.
Our country consciously gave up possessing nuclear weapons almost 30 years ago and joined the NPT as a non-nuclear weapon state. And even now Belarus does not intend to change its position.
Earlier Lukashenko stated that Russia will defend us, if necessary, as there is a corresponding agreement between the countries, so there is no need for Belarus to have nuclear weapons on its territory. At the same time, the head of the Belarusian state stressed that the use of such weapons would be the end, because the other nuclear powers would not stand aside.
