Aryna Sabalenka becomes first racket of the planet for the first time in her career
Aryna Sabalenka has topped the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking for the first time in her career, BELTA reports.
Despite her defeat in the final match of the US Open, Sabalenka surpassed Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, who failed to defend her title in New York. Newly crowned US Open winner Corey Gauff moved up to third place.
Aryna Sabalenka became the second representative of Belarus, who managed to take the first position in the world ranking. Earlier Victoria Azarenka, who is now ranked 23rd in the WTA ranking, achieved such success. Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich is on the 102nd position.
The men's ranking is again headed by Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, who defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev in the final of the US Open. For the 36-year-old Serb, this is the 24th championship title at Grand Slam tournaments. The best Belarusian Ilya Ivashka is 153rd in the ranking of the Association of Tennis Professionals.
