Olympics-2020: day three. Cheering for Belarusians!
Day 3 at the Olympics in Tokyo. We continue to cheer for the Belarusian athletes. Our team is without any medals so far, but today Karina Deminskaya, Karina Kozlovskaya and Anna Marusova had a good chance to get on the podium. They made it to the semi-finals of the team event in archery knocking out the strong Chinese women and the hosts of the games, the Japanese. They lost in the semi-finals to South Korea, the future Olympics champion. In the match for the bronze medal our trio failed to defeat the Germans 1:5, so the girls were one step away from the podium. In women's 10 m air pistol shooting the experienced Victoria Chayka, for whom the Olympics in Tokyo is the 6th in her career, was not selected for the final, she finished in the 11th place. In the men's air rifle, Yuri Scherbatsevich was 15th in the qualification and didn't make it to the finals either. The leader of our tennis team, the third racket of the world, Aryna Sabalenka has already made it to the second round. She gave just three games to her Polish opponent Magda Linette with 6:2 in the first game and 6:1 in the second one. The match lasted just over an hour. In the 1/16 finals Sabalenka will play against Dona Vekic of Croatia, the 47th WTA racket. By the way, there was a sensation: the world ranking leader Ashleigh Barty of Australia lost to Spain's Sara Sorribes-Tormo - 4:6, 3:6. Further on the Belarusians were watching another debutant of the games Ilya Ivashka. The Belarusian, 66th in the world ranking, defeated Gaël Monfils, the 18th racket of the world. One break in the decisive game decided everything: in the tense end Iavashka won 7:5 and in the next round he will play against Mikhail Kukushkin from Kazakhstan. And right now Ivashka is getting ready to step on the court with Yegor GerAsimov to play in the doubles, his opponents are New Zealand's Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus. And our swimmers Ilya Shymanovich and Anastasia Shkurday made it to the finals in their home disciplines. Tomorrow morning, early in the morning, they will fight for the medals of the Games: Shkurday will compete in the 100m butterfly stroke, and Shymanovich will swim the 100m breaststroke. Two Belarusian crews qualified for the semifinals: the women's lightweight double Elena Furman - Inna Nikulina and the men's pair Dmitry Volodko - Sergey Furman. To make it to the finals our crews will try early Tuesday morning.
