One of most exiting finals at 32nd Summer Olympic Games
Our compatriot Maksim Nedasekau was competing for a medal in high jump. He showed the same result as the Olympic champions (and there were two of them), but because of the greater number of attempts Maksim Nedasekau got a bronze medal. The awards ceremony for track and field athletes took place on August 2.
7 000 897 km away from Tokyo, in Vitebsk, the people close to Maksim, his parents, were crying with happiness. Such was a reaction to the height of 2.37 and the new national record, and of course, the long-awaited Olympic medal of their son.
Of course Ivan Tikhon, the chairman of the Athletics Federation, and the captain of the Olympic team, 45-year-old double Olympic medalist, rejoiced at Maksim's success and entered the hammer throw section himself the day after the final. Three Belarusians (Tikhon, Gleb Dudarev and Yury Vasilchenko) participated in the qualification and all three of them failed to get into the finals.
In kayak and canoe sprint Oleg Yurena in men's canoe 1,000m event finished first and qualified for the semifinals. Marina Litvinchuk and Olga Khudenko in 500m kayak also qualified to the semifinals finishing second.
And finally, our Yuriy Scherbatsevich struggled for the podium in the small-bore rifle three-position final. He was close to the medal, but his first shot spoiled everything, so he ended up in the 7th place. But this was the best result of Yury Scherbatsevich's performance at all his 4 Olympics.
