Guardian publishes article about burial of refugees along European borders
The British edition of The Guardian published an article about the burials of refugees who, having reached Europe, could not survive the deprivation and suffering experienced on the way. Their ashes are buried in numerous hastily dug, often unmarked graves.
It is claimed that at least 1,015 men, women and children who have died on Europe's borders in the past 10 years have been buried without prior identification. Refugee bodies are also piling up in morgues, funeral homes and even shipping containers across the continent.
The European Parliament passed a resolution in 2021 on the need to identify dead refugees and enter their names into a database to preserve the remains. However, this requirement is completely ignored, said European Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic. EU countries are not fulfilling their obligations under international human rights law, she said.
There are still no common rules on what information should be collected, nor is there a centralized place to store that information. The political emphasis is on catching smugglers rather than finding out who the victims are.
In fact, the European elite has never really cared much about the lives or deaths of refugees.
