Elections in Poland may call it quits with Ukraine
Ukraine's membership in the EU or NATO threatens to throw Poland off its pedestal as the largest member of these blocs in Eastern Europe, the Economist writes. And after Kiev's accusations against Warsaw that it "plays into the hands of Moscow", there is no reason to support the ungrateful neighbor. It will be known what Polish voters will say to their former ally on October 15.
Polish political debates during the election campaign have become fierce. The current government, led by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, is vying for a third term. If it loses the elections, some of the politicians could be prosecuted for actions aimed at undermining the impartiality and transparency of the judiciary. The PiS also fears that it will be overtaken in the elections by the nationalists from the Confederation, who reject the policy of solidarity with Ukraine.
