Flowers to the victors trampled by tractor in Latvia
Vandalism and blasphemy at the state level. Latvian authorities used tractors to removeall flowers brought by residents of Riga to the Monument to the Liberator of the City. Before the Victory Day the government installed several fences around the monument with flags of Latvia and Ukraine, removed the stop of public transport near the park with the monument, but this did not help. Despite all obstacles, people honored the memory of the fallen soldiers. Flowers from citizens were taken by special employees and they themselves laid them on the asphalt.
The reason for the conflict was "forbidden symbols": there was a picture of St. George's ribbon and Victory order on her grandfather's portrait. The woman refused to remove the portrait and was taken to the police.
Residents of Riga: Bulldozers will be not enough to remove all the flowers
The tractors didn't stop the citizens of Riga - they are again carrying flowers to the fallen soldiers. The mayor's office tried to justify the scandalous decision by saying that it was made according to the plan developed by the state police. The local mayor assessed the actions of municipal workers as "professional and appropriate to the circumstances".
