Diversity of religions in Belarus
The Republic of Belarus is a multi-confessional state. There are no conflicts on the basis of religion here. The equality of religions in Belarus is enshrined at the state level. According to the Constitution, everyone is guaranteed the freedom of religion. More than 3500 religious organizations and more than 3300 communities of various directions are registered in our country. There are 25 confessions in total.
Christianity is the most widespread religion in Belarus, namely Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Protestantism. Less numerous are Islam, Judaism and Hinduism. The ratio between the religions in modern Belarus according to the statistics is as follows: about 80% of the population are Orthodox, 10-15% are Roman Catholics.
How different confessions get along
State authorities support the initiatives of religious organizations aimed at promoting religious tolerance and respect for the rights of believers. At the same time, work is being done to prevent the formation of destructive organizations. All this ensures good relations between the religions in Belarus.
We also have an Interfaith Advisory Council. Its basic tasks are to develop a dialogue between religions, to keep the traditions of tolerance, to solve disputable questions together with the authorities.
Ivie is one of the examples of how different religions can coexist peacefully without overshadowing each other. Four confessions (Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism) have co-existed here for many years. A monument has even been erected in honor of this unity. Ivie is a small model of a friendly world, so it will be interesting to many tourists.
How the state supports religion
The head of state pays attention to the work of religious organizations. Traditionally, he holds meetings with the Synod of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church, and visits churches. There are more than 1,000 of them in the country, and this number is gradually growing. National shrines are regularly restored and cathedrals are restored.
One of the most significant events was the awarding of the prize "For Spiritual Revival" for translation of the New Testament into the Belarusian language.
A network of educational institutions where people with different faiths can receive spiritual education is also developing. A good example is the Saints Methodius and Cyrill Institute of Theology, where students of different confessions study.
