22.9 tons of hazardous waste removed for disposal from Belarus
Almost 23 tons of hazardous waste has been taken out of our country for disposal. The old Soviet-era capacitors were stored in the territory of enterprises in Gomel and Grodno regions. This is another step towards fulfilling Belarus' obligations under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. As a result, five temporary waste storage sites have been closed down. The condensers were packed in leak-proof containers for safe transport. The hazardous waste will be disposed of at a specialised company in France in an environmentally friendly way.
Ludmila Vakulchik, head of the test laboratory at the Novogrudok Gas Equipment Plant: The company stored 93 units waste taken out of circulation. Our enterprise was a partner organisation in an initiative launched by the United Nations Development Program in Belarus in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. As a result, work has been done to remove the waste outside the Republic of Belarus.
It is planned to fully neutralise the waste containing persistent organic pollutants in our country by 2028.
