How many Eternal Flames are there in Belarus and where do they burn all the time?
Eternal Flame is the memory of the living about the dead, about those who at the cost of untold effort gave the future generations peace and life itself.
The press service of the Ministry of Energy of Belarus informs that the gas service has completed the preparation of the Eternal Flame memorials for May 9. This is reported by 1prof.by.
"Regular maintenance of gas equipment is carried out in the country at 127 memorial complexes "Eternal Flame," set in memory of those killed in the Great Patriotic War, of which 20 operate constantly, while the rest are lit during the holidays," told the agency.
For the forthcoming holiday specialists checked serviceability of systems of gas supply of memorials and serviceability of their burners, cleaned decorative grids from garbage and soot and carried out adjustment of flame burning.
As mentioned above, in total there are 127 Eternal Flames in our country - 20 permanently lit and 107 are lit on holidays and celebrations.
The most famous Eternal Flame is located in Victory Square in Minsk - it has not been extinguished since July 3, 1961.
No less famous is the Eternal Flame at the Brest Fortress - it has been burning in front of the ruins of the former Engineering Department since September 25, 1971. Eternal Flames also burn on the central squares of regional centers.
Eternal Flames in Belarus:
Minsk - 2 Eternal Flames, of which 2 are permanently burning (Victory Square and the "Masiukovschina" memorial complex);
Minsk region - 19, of which 2 are permanently burning;
Brest region - 27, of which 5 are permanently burning;
Vitebsk region - 24, of which 2 are permanently burning;
Gomel region - 19, of which 3 are permanently burning;
Grodno region - 19, of which 3 are permanently burning;
Mogilev region - 19, of which 3 are permanently burning.
It is worth noting that the tradition of eternal flames goes back to the ancient cult of the goddess Vesta. In recent history, the Eternal Flame was first lit November 11, 1923 at the Arc de Triomphe at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris.
