Heads of 3 countries unveil new object of memorial in Trostenets
Alexander Lukashenko has urged everyone to preserve the truth about the war and prevent the revival of the terrible past. The President of Belarus took part in an event dedicated to the memory of the victims of Nazism. The meeting-requiem in Trostenets was also attended by the Presidents of Germany and Austria.
Today, the second stage of the largest memorial was opened. Trostenets is the fourth largest death camp in Europe after Auschwitz, Treblinka and Majdanek. Here, peaceful Soviet citizens and prisoners of war were killed, as well as citizens of Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Today, numerous guests were able to appreciate the full picture of the memorial. The tract Blagovshina is a shooting place of the secret police, of which very few people knew. A memorial cemetery has been organized here.
Addressing the meeting participants, Alexander Lukashenko proposed to create a global electronic book of memory of Trostenets by common efforts. The very comprehension of such tragedies should give a truly global effect. After all, the modern world community is clearly in need of an international dialogue of a new level aimed at overcoming all contradictions. It is only through trust, respect and an open, honest conversation that it is possible to strengthen international security, resist hostility, hatred and bigotry, provide children with happy future.
The rally-requiem was also visited by former Austrian President Heinz Fischer. Many other foreign guests attended the ceremony, including representatives of state and public organizations from Austria, Germany, Israel, Poland and the Czech Republic. Among them were Secretary of State of the Cabinet of the President of Poland Krzysztof Szczerski, Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament Vojtech Filip. The World Jewish Congress was represented by Deputy CEO for Diplomacy Maram Stern.
Alexander Van der Bellen and Frank-Walter Steinmeier have arrived at the Palace of Independence. The Belarusian leader will hold separate meetings with the Presidents of Germany and Austria. The politicians will discuss the issues of joint commemoration of the victims of Nazism, bilateral cooperation and prospects for building multilateral cooperation in the region.
