Constitutional Commission summarizes preliminary work on draft Constitution of Belarus
Belarus is continuing to work on the draft of the Basic Law of the country. This week the Constitutional Commission summed up the preliminary results. The amendments will affect literally all spheres of life in our society. The Constitution of the future must look beyond the horizon and meet the challenges and threats that face the young state. The amendments shall provide a clear framework for the attitude of the Belarusians to the traditional family values. It is suggested that marriage should be written in the Constitution as a union of a woman and a man. It is suggested to introduce the ombudsman institution to ensure efficient communication between the citizens and the state. Special attention shall be devoted to the redistribution of powers and increasing the role of the parliament in the country. The term of office of deputies is proposed to be increased to five years and a single day of voting for local councils and the parliament will be introduced. The proposal to limit the number of possible presidential terms to two was widely discussed in the society and professional environment. The attempt to follow the standard of obligatory rotation of power has been sharply criticized. The question arises as to whether this would violate the right of those citizens who would consider it possible to place their trust in a candidate for a third term, but would face an artificial obstacle in the Constitution.
