Messages of heroes! Another inscription found on walls of Brest Fortress
Messages of heroes to the generation of victors. Another inscription left by a defender was found in the Brest Fortress. Scrawled name and date were found on the facade of the barracks. Presumably, they were written by a Red Army soldier, who served in the 333rd rifle regiment and died in June 1941 during the defense of the citadel. But the accuracy of the facts has yet to be established. .
Researchers at the memorial complex are convinced that the stones can speak. One of the most famous inscriptions was recently given a status of historical and cultural value of the first category: "Dying without shame". The author is still unknown. But despite this, the message has become a symbol of the unbroken spirit of all the heroes of the fortress.
The inscription on the bricks of the Brest Fortress has become a historical and cultural value
Larisa Bibik, Scientific Secretary of the Memorial Complex "Brest Fortress-Hero":
"They didn't think about staying in history. They would have written some names then. They just wanted their relatives and the country in the first place to know: they have done their duty. This is the message of all those to us. And we have very little to do today - to respect every brick of the Brest Fortress, every inch of land."
A fragment of the wall has already been seen by millions of tourists. And in 1958, the inscription became a real sensation. It helped to discover the historical truth, which on the scorched earth of the Brest Fortress was collected literally bit by bit.
In 1941, the White Palace was a storage room. It is known that in June it came under artillery fire. Part of the building collapsed. And the basement became a shelter for the defenders.
The messages of the heroes of the citadel
Surrounded by the enemy, the Red Army soldiers knew that they could not get out of the fortress. Years later, workers accidentally found the messages on the walls. The scrawled letters became a document, which confirms that the heroes fought to the last.
Olga Ignatovich, researcher at the "Brest Fortress-Hero" memorial:
"At the bottom, in a corner, they found an inscription, it was scratched with a sharp object on three bricks from top to bottom: "Dying without shame". We don't know exactly when this inscription was left. The bricks were removed and a memorial plaque was left in their place."
Messages of citadel heroes
Three messages of citadel defenders were preserved till our days. But there were others. Sergey Smirnov, who knew the heroes personally, mentioned about some of them the in his book. He collected evidence of eyewitnesses and did a lot of research work.
"I was left alone: Stepanchikov and Zhuntiaev died. The Germans are in the church itself. The last grenade was left, but I will not surrender alive. Comrades, avenge us!"
The search for information is still going on today. How many more inscriptions have survived in the fortress is unknown. So it is possible that the walls will help discover new names of heroes and the history of their exploits.
