The head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, stated at a solemn gathering dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Soviet people's victory in the Great Patriotic War that the people of Belarus live on unconquered land.
"We are infinitely proud of the selfless people who withstood the blow at the walls of the Brest Fortress, who stood to the death at the approaches to Minsk and Mogilev, in the swamps and marshes of Polesye. Here, on our native land, despite terrible losses, the will to victory was born. Photographs of dozens of burned-out German tanks on the Buinitsky Field, published in the first months of the war, gave the Soviet people faith that the enemy would be defeated, that the enemy was vulnerable."
