Is it possible to finance an election campaign in Belarus?
Can the funds or organizations finance an election campaign, will polling stations be opened abroad? The Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, Igor Karpenko, told everyone about this.
We have regulations prohibiting any financing of an election campaign, candidates, their funds from abroad. It does not matter that this is done through some international organizations or through diplomatic missions located in the country. Financing of political parties from abroad is also prohibited.
Igor Karpenko indicated that Belarus does not open polling stations abroad. By the way, the country was criticized a lot because of this, but we were forced to adopt this legislative norm and not open polling stations abroad. This is explained by the fact that, firstly, this is not an innovation of purely Belarusian legislation. Such norms exist in a number of electoral legislations of states.
Secondly, if today in some countries cannot ensure the safety of diplomatic missions or their number has been reduced, then it is simply technically impossible to open polling stations.
"We do not have to wait, we will work according to the electoral legislation that was adopted after the constitutional referendum and which we tested on the single voting day. But I do not rule out that after the presidential election campaign, some innovations in the electoral legislation may appear, which we, as the Central Election Commission, vested with powers, will analyze and make a proposal to the subjects of the legislative initiative," the chairman said.
It should be noted that such subjects in Belarus are the President, the government, each deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.
