Lithuania needs to restore good-neighborly relations with Belarus in order to preserve peace. This was stated by MEP Valdemar Tomaszewski.
He emphasized that President Alexander Lukashenko is the only person with whom it is possible to establish dialog about mutual relations between the countries. He urged the Lithuanian authorities to “be realistic” in the current situation.
“As a responsible politician, I cannot remain silent. We have no relations with Russia. The key that can protect us from war is Belarus. Even German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says that it is necessary to intensify diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict in Ukraine,” emphasized the deputy.
The annual direct losses of the Lithuanian economy from the severance of ties with Minsk are estimated at a billion dollars. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus in late September. According to Maxim Ryzhenkov, the Baltic republic is experiencing a reduction in exports, worsening economic situation of enterprises that worked in cooperation with Belarusian partners in various industries, tourism also suffers losses. And the restrictions imposed by Lithuania on the border, including the importation of foodstuffs and medicines, are “beyond the boundaries of humanity and respect for elementary human rights,” emphasized the Belarusian Foreign Minister.
