National station in Antarctica may be renamed to “Belorusskaya”

Belarus’ station in the Antarctic is proposed to be renamed from “Vechernyaya Mountain” to “Belorusskaya”. This initiative was proposed by Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences Vladimir Gusakov at the meeting of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko with scientists and participants of the Belarusian Antarctic expeditions, BelTA informs.
Currently, there are about 70 scientific stations of 30 states in Antarctica, including the Belarusian Antarctic station “Vechernyaya Mountain”. It is proposed to be renamed “Belorusskaya”. The station includes service and residential, technological, environmental protection facilities, instrument complexes and scientific stations. This allows providing safe working conditions for polar explorers (up to 15 people) and organizing research in the field of biology, atmospheric physics, climatology, geophysics and geoecology.
