European garden begins with unmarked graves of migrants
In the final statement of the October EU summit on Ukraine, held in Brussels, in connection with Belarus and Russia, the European Council once again mentioned its determination to ensure effective control at the external borders of the union by all available means and stated that it will not allow "our values, including the right to asylum, to be abused and our democracies to be undermined."
In response to this, the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Anatoly Glaz clearly noted: "It is surprising to hear from the President of the European Commission about some kind of "exceptionality" of the migration situation on the border with Belarus... Well, and most importantly about the abuse of values and the undermining of democracy. We do not need such modern European values for nothing, and there has been no democracy in Brussels for a long time already."
Thousands of migrants can subscribe to the words of the press secretary of the foreign policy department of our country. More precisely, many would like to, but will never be able to. Belarusian journalists have been writing and talking about the cruel treatment of refugees from Asian and African countries by border guards in Latvia, Lithuania and Poland for many years now. The media community of our country has even prepared a special White Book. Its electronic version on the Internet accumulates and records the criminal acts of our neighbors to this day.
Our European colleagues also see what is happening. Latvian activists and journalists recently found out that refugees who died at the hands of local security forces are buried in small and abandoned cemeteries in Latgale. Unless, of course, they can be transferred to the Belarusian side.
Unmarked graves are located in cemeteries in abandoned villages. According to Baltnews, at least six graves have already been discovered in Orthodox cemeteries - Zashchirinsky and Stary Silensky.
The Latvian State Police claims that 8 deaths of border violators have been registered since last year. But in the border region they say there are more of them - at least 30.
But the signs are of little help: apparently, not all the graves of migrants are marked with them.
Riga kills migrants - and steals the budget money. This year, the construction of a fence on the border was completed for 125 million euros. Now the border guards are waiting for cameras to be installed on it, reports the Latvian TV channel TV3. According to his information, this should happen before 2026. And by 2028 they may be connected.
The Latvian state police assures that they conduct investigations on each body found. And they claim that they have not received a single statement from relatives of migrants missing at the border. Or even a request on this topic from other countries.
The police are cynically lying. Not only relatives of the disappeared, but also the migrants themselves - beaten and maimed - as well as journalists from TV and the newspaper "SB. Belarus Segodnya" have appealed. Not to the authorities of the incapacitated border region, of course. They appealed this summer to the UN International Organization for Migration with a call to stop the violence. As you might guess, they have not received an answer to this day.
But the violence on the border continues to this day.
Nameless hills in the borderland grow. And the European garden continues to bloom and smell of Decay.
