Strike at monument to Russian commander Barclay de Tolly in Riga
About fifty residents of Riga are on strike at the monument to Russian commander Barclay de Tolly. This week, the Finance and Administration Committee of the Riga City Council supported the dismantling and relocation of the monument. According to the city authorities, it glorifies Russian culture and history. The monument was built on people's donations back in 1913.
It is noteworthy that the struggle of Latvian citizens against the historical revisionism of the government takes place on the day of Riga's liberation from the Nazi invaders. The Nazis planned to destroy the city, to blow up more than 5 thousand objects, but such a scenario was prevented: with the help of partisans everything was demined. 150 thousand Soviet soldiers died in the battles for the liberation of Latvia from fascist oppression.
