Romanian election winner Georgescu calls cancellation of results a coup d'état
Calin Georgescu called the cancellation of the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania a "legalized coup d'état." The Constitutional Court's decision was preceded by a real persecution of the candidate who received the majority of votes in the first round. The State Department put pressure on the Romanian authorities, warning of the threat of reduced investment in the event of abandoning the course to the West. Georgescu has repeatedly stated that Bucharest would benefit from good relations with Moscow and noted that membership in NATO and the EU did not provide Romania with the necessary protection. In the second round, he was supposed to meet with the leader of the Save Romania Union party, Elena Lasconi. She called the Constitutional Court's decision illegal and immoral and emphasized that presidents "should not be appointed by behind-the-scenes negotiations." According to her, Romania trampled democracy.
