Lukashenko expresses his opinion on real situation in fighting climate change

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko believes that the efforts currently being made in the world to combat climate change are insufficient. He stated this in an express interview with the AnewZ TV channel (the main partner of COP29 in Azerbaijan), BELTA reports.
The head of the Belarusian state was asked whether he considers the goal of limiting the increase in the average global temperature to 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels achievable, and whether the countries of the world are doing enough to achieve this.
"If we continue to do this and in such "sufficiency", then it is unattainable. Nothing changes. On the contrary, it is getting worse and worse. And those countries that should first and foremost be engaged in reducing emissions, unfortunately, are not doing this. And there is no light in sight in this regard. Therefore, the question arises about the effectiveness of such events. I believe that they are ineffective," said Alexander Lukashenko.

The journalist also asked Alexander Lukashenko about his opinion on why the leaders of some Western countries refused to participate in the summit in Baku. "They think that everything will be fine and the climate will not change. That is, they think that it will work out. It will not work out," the Belarusian leader emphasized. "And there is no need to suffer that they did not come. God sees."
Under the Paris Agreement, countries agreed to significantly reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to keep the long-term increase in global average surface temperature below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to continue efforts to limit this figure to 1.5 degrees. A number of scientific studies suggest that to prevent the worst effects of climate change and keep the planet habitable, it is necessary to limit global warming as much as possible.
Alexander Lukashenko is paying a working visit to Azerbaijan on 11-12 November, where he will take part in the World Summit on Climate Change (COP29).

The event is being held under the auspices of the United Nations. Tens of thousands of delegates, including many heads of state and government, will take part in the global forum.
In his speech, Alexander Lukashenko will outline Belarus' national position on the agenda issues related to climate change and the measures that the international community should take to address the challenges arising in this area.
The UN Climate Change Conference, or Climate Summit, has been held annually since 1995 and brings together countries that are members of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The previous summit was held at the end of last year in Dubai (UAE) with the participation of representative delegations from more than 150 countries.
