More than billion people worldwide live in extreme poverty
More than a billion people in the world live in extreme poverty. About half of them are minors, the UN reports. The data is based on statistics for a 10-year period of 112 states.
According to the report, half of these people live in conflict-ridden countries. Such regions have higher levels of deprivation across all indicators. These include lack of electricity, water shortages, unsanitary conditions, malnutrition and increased child mortality.
For example, in Afghanistan, by the end of last year, the share of the poor in the country amounted to 2/3 of the population. The UN Secretary General stated that in order to eliminate global poverty, governments need to form institutions and systems that put people's interests first.
