Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Novogrudok celebrates its 400th anniversary
One of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Belarus - the Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel - celebrates its 400th anniversary.
The history of the Church begins in 1624, when a wooden church was built in the center of Novogrudok. A century later - it turned into a Baroque stone church. At the beginning of the 19th century it found its patron: it was named after St. Michael the Archangel, who is considered to be the benefactor of this land. There was a spiritual school here, where Adam Mickiewicz, the Belarusian enlightener and poet, studied.
The church survived the Great Patriotic War, and in the post-war years it was destroyed by fire, but it was rebuilt in the 90s.
Today St. Michael's Church is a spiritual and cultural center of Novogrudok, a monument of antiquity that attracts tourists. The church preserved the ancient organ and opened for viewing the underground crypt.
All year long the church hosts anniversary events: concerts, conferences, Cross Processions, prayer meetings. Today and tomorrow is the culmination of the festivities.
