Space in healthcare! Belarus is a world leader in organ transplantation
The most high-tech area of modern medicine is organ, tissue and cell transplantation. In this area, Belarus is not only a regional but also a world leader in the number of operations performed. This is about a thousand transplants per year, where a significant part is kidney transplantation.
Our doctors successfully perform liver, heart and lung transplants. And the new bone marrow and stem cell transplantation unit, which opened at the beginning of this year, has already reduced the waiting list for transplants from six months to a couple of weeks.
The waiting list has become much shorter, including due to the established donor base. And today Belarus ranks 9th in the world rankings for the number of effective donors per million population.
Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
"People all over the world make money on this. We are good-natured Slavs, it seems inconvenient for us to make money on our health, but the issue is not even about earnings, but about our people not taking this money to Germany and somewhere else. Therefore, we need to do operations, interventions and other high-tech things here. This is the meaning of my support and the state as a whole. And the second thing I need from you personally is that in each region and inter-district centers we teach people how to work."
The technologies and competencies that Belarusian doctors possess today can rightfully be called space in healthcare. Only a few dozen countries have conquered such heights. And only a few can, like Belarus, do this for free for their people. Even when it comes to transplanting vital organs.
